DIRE WARNING and a Few Questions

FIRST THE DIRE WARNING. Don’t replace the iWeb domain files on the library computers as you will wipe out people’s work. Really. Don’t do that. Come see me first.

Steve says-

how do I make a iweb name it never works, reply quick, my deadline is soon!!!!!!!!!!

Steve, you’re going to have to clarify for me. If you are talking about renaming a page or site. You do that in the left hand sidebar. Select the page/site name you want to change hit return and type in your new title.

Josh says -

is it true that if you turn the airport off the administrators cant watch you

Administrators and teachers have eyes which enable them to watch you even without the magic of the Internet.

Josh says-

Can you give me the link to the talent show video from last year, you know the one that has all the teacher and the song beverly hills

Yep. Here it is.

Will says -

Is it true that if you turn your airport off the administrators can’t watch u

See answer above, although the way this keeps getting asked might mean that you are doing things that are a bad idea. There are lots of ways this might turn out badly for you. I’d consider that.

Will says -

Bologna is good, and I would like to put my website on the world wide web but I don’t know how. P.S. I do not want to publish it to a folder. PLEASE RESPAND ASAP

I disagree about the bologna but the other answer isn’t quite as simple as you’d like. Publishing to a folder would be the first step in getting it on the web unless you have a .Mac account. What you need is space on a server somewhere to put your website. If you come with written parental permission I can help you out further.

Backing Up iWeb

It’s not that hard, but it’s not normal, so watch this movie on how to back up your iWeb site!

REMEMBER- if you export and back that up you will have a copy but will be UNABLE to change it at all in iWeb.

Here’s the movie-

A Few More Questions

Hi, its matt, how do you change the color of the text box on iweb

Hi, Matt. It’s the technology ninja. I change the text box color simply by thinking about it but if you want to do it try this-

Click on the text box. Open up the inspector (the blue circle with the i at the bottom of iWeb) Choose the tab with the rectangle and the circle and then change the fill options. You probably want color fill and then pick your color.

I’ll try to make a quick video on this Monday.

How do I get Firefox ? I really want it. - Devin

If you want it at home just download and install but on our student iBooks you’re out of luck. Maybe next year. Sorry.

is there any iweb programs for windows computers

Matthew, There is nothing that good for Windoze computers. DreamWeaver is pretty good but is not really like iWeb. Frontpage or something like that’s about as close as you’ll get.

iWeb Questions et al

Anna asks-

how do you get different slides to go on with your presentation?? by the way this is really cool!!

You can do what I think you’re asking about using the “Photos” page. It’ll make small snapshots on the page but when you put it on the web it’ll make a slideshow like this one (just click start slideshow in the left hand corner). There’s a tutorial page on it here.

I’m glad you like it. It’s amazing to me how easy it is. I used to write html to make websites by hand and iWeb makes it so painless.

PW writes-

Ligula suspendisse nulla pretium, rhoncus tempor placerat fermentum, enim integer ad vestibulum volutpat. Nisl rhoncus turpis est, vel elit, congue wisi enim nunc ultricies sit, magna tincidunt. Maecenas aliquam maecenas ligula nostra, accumsan taciti. Sociis mauris in integer, a dolor netus non dui aliquet, sagittis felis sodales, dolor sociis mauris, vel eu libero cras. Interdum at.

Basically, I’d agree but only in Latvia is it really common. On your second point however you are way off base but I think you know that. Thirdly, you can find out more here. I hope that helps with your problem.

Anya asks-

How do you put music on it and
how do you save it
and how do you put it all together

To add music click on the Media Inspector at the bottom of the page (it has big green musical note on it- like iTunes). Then click on music and find the song you want in iTunes and drag it over.

To save the site just go to File>Save.

It kind of stays “all together” by itself but maybe I don’t get what you mean. If you want to clarify I’ll try and answer again.

Brittany writes in an oddly capitalized fashion-

HEY “TN” i HAVE A QUESTi0N i AM D0iN THAT iWEB PR0JECT THiNG iN CiViCS CLASS AND i D0NT KN0W H0W T0 PUT MUSiC 0N THERE.AND YEAH H0W D0 Y0U GARAGE BAND i REALLi D0NT KN0W.AND i WAS PAYiNG ATTENTi0N i JUST D0NT UNDERSTAND..0KAi WELL iF Y0U C0ULD WRiTE BACK THAT W0ULD BE NiCE.
0KAi THANKS BUNCHES!

I talked about the music right above your question (I’ll see if I can’t get a movie up tomorrow showing it exactly).

Garageband tutorials can be seen here, here or here. Any of these should give you a good start on using it and I’d be happy to answer any questions here or in person.

You are welcome super duper bunches.

Jacob says-

i have NEVER been able to access the itunes store on my ibook, and also I CANT BACK UP because it says i need an administrator’s name and password so what should i do

It may be impossible. If so, sorry about that.

Come by the help desk or my office about the backing up issue and I can fix it in a few seconds (I think so anyway). Don’t live your life un-backed up! Just say no. It’s not worth it.

For New Students or Those with Short Memories . . .

In case you’ve forgotten the old stuff we had movies on from the beginning of the year here they are. I’m also looking for new topics. Anyone have any ideas?

Unknown Person with K in Their Name Questions Continue

More Kailey Questions . . .

Ok, first, that title is embarrassing! Second, the past two days I haven’t been able to access the itunes music store. I got onto apple.com, found the song I wanted, and then clicked listen on itunes, and then the next site was blocked! I would ppreciate it if you either unblock the site or give complete instructions on how to access it. or just get onto it and type an entry here if you can access it.

I’ll get a student iBook at home Monday and try things out if we have any extra loaners. Other than that I’m not sure as I don’t use your computers at home. Since you have to go through the filter it may still block you at home. I don’t have any right to unblock sites. That’s all controlled through the HCPS central office. I can recommend sites be blocked.

Ok, so it costs money to publish an iweb to the internet? Do you know how much? I’ve told my Mom, and she said that I’d have to ask my Dad because my Dad is only who has a clue what he’d be doing. If there’s a cost, I need to know a bit more about it. Could you please fill me in with as much info as you can?

It might cost money, it can be free. All you need is space on a server somewhere. Some ISPs give away server space when you sign up as a customer. That might be an option for you. There are lots and lots of options. If you want to spend about $8 a month then you can get lots of really decent options for what you want to do. I’d be happy to talk to your dad if this is something you want to pursue.

HI TN! First, You’re so cool!!! And when I was on iweb, I tried bringing a podcast I had made in garage band over to iweb Poadcastic page where it says to place a new podcast here to replace the fake one, and it copies, and then has another box with the name of my podcast and nothing else. No play, no nothin. Pleas help!

I am, aren’t I?

Did you “Share” the podcast to iTunes? That’s how you’ll need to do it. Once you share it to iTunes you should be able to pull it in no problem. If you still have issues stop by and see me at some point and I’ll help you out. I’m glad someone is using Garageband and iWeb to their full potential.

If you wanted to make a website because you played around with iweb and published it to the inernet at home, could you get in trouble for that? I made one for fun, and I wanted to publish it; but not if I’ll get in trouble for that. Please answer this soon, I’m dying to know! Thanks TN.

There are no school rules about creating web pages outside of school and posting them outside of school (at school is a slightly different story). As long as it’s ok with your parents and you make sure you’re not giving away any personal information posting a website is OK with me.

7,000 questions from K-Dog

I’ll do my best to answer in order-

uh, yeah, First off, thankyou for having your website darker colored. Being on brightly colored stuff doing schoolwork for a long can hurt your eyes. whenever I get on here my eyes are rlaxed. and also, Why can’t you back up at home?

You’re welcome. Ninjas are fans of the dark, except for white ninjas and no one really likes them anyway.

You can’t back up at home because the way we verify the password (Kerberos) is not accessible when you’re not on a HCPS network. You should be able to back up at HCPS libraries though.

What are you talking about?

I don’t know. I’m just typing stuff. Do you hear my voice in your head? Because that would be pretty neat.

/Users/student/Desktop/icon_smile.gif
just checking to see if this works…

That won’t work because it’s a path that isn’t really on the Internet. When you link to the image the other way the image is on a server and open to be viewed by anyone. You really wouldn’t want everyone to be able to look at all the files on your computer.

Oh yeah, and when you said,”but I think the mysterious young lady who left the comment can tell you an easier way,” how did you know if that was a girl or not?

P.S- I solemly swear by… uh,…anything important to you (and my Ibook) that I’m NOT the person you were refering to anyway. Just curious.

I know it wasn’t you. I can see a lot more than what shows on the page, including names. So basically, I looked at her name. That doesn’t sound too impressive now though, does it?

Can you tell me how to access the ITunes music store at home? I want to get the songs I’m practicing in band onto my ITunes to help me keep the beat and help me keep my place in the song, but I can’t even get into the store! I heard some people in band class saying they looked on the store with their parents and couldn’t a certain song, and I want to know: Is it my computer, or am I doing something wrong?

I thought it would work at home. I may be wrong. Anyone out there connecting to the music store?

I’ll take a student iBook home to try it.

Are you buying these songs? I might be able to help transfer them over. Swing by the help desk and talk to me or give me some more details.

=rand(200,99)

Jacob asked why when you put =rand(200,99)  in Word and hit return does it fill up with a bunch of text.  This is a word feature that allows people to see what their layouts would looklike without having to fill it with their own handwritten text.  It’s kind of like lorem ipsum.

Basically, it a feature for saving time.  This way I don’t have to type a bunch of fake text in to see if I like the font, size, layout etc. of the document I just designed.
